Anatomical landmarks for safer carpal tunnel decompression: an experimental cadaveric study
BACKGROUND Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common presentation to surgical outpatient clinics. Treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome involves surgical division of the flexor retinaculum. Palmar and recurrent branches of the median nerve as well as the superficial palmar arch are at risk of damage. METHODOLOGY Thirteen cadavers of Sri Lankan nationality were selected. Cadavers with deformed or damag...
متن کاملDecompression of the Carpal Tunnel
Carpal tunnel syndrome is the commonest cause of acro-paraesthesia in the upper limb and decompression of the median nerve is therefore a common minor operation. On the whole, the procedure has a good reputation for relief of symptoms and freedom from complications, though not in every series has it been troublefree (Table 1). This paper reports a review of shortterm and a random selection of l...
متن کاملAnatomical variations of the carpal tunnel structures.
There are many anatomical variations in and around the carpal tunnel that affect the nerves, tendons and arteries in this area. Awareness of these variations is important both during the clinical examination and during carpal tunnel release. The purpose of the present review is to highlight recognized anatomical variations within the carpal tunnel including variation in nerve anatomy, tendon an...
متن کاملEvolving concepts of median nerve decompression in the carpal tunnel.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common and best known of the compression neuropathies in the upper extremity. The authors review their clinical experiences in the diagnosis and management of this entity and survey the extensive literature on the subject. An operative approach for decompression of the median nerve in the carpal canal is described that has proved to be most efficacious and safe.
متن کاملAcute carpal tunnel syndrome. Complications of delayed decompression.
Five patients suffered injuries around the wrist complicated by acute tunnel syndrome. Pain associated with median nerve paraesthesia or hypo-aesthesia are indications for urgent treatment; in four patients where operation was delayed, the outcome was poor.
